The fort was the capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for approximately 26 years.<\/p><p>Historical Significance Originally named Murumdev, the fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1646 and was the first capital of his Maratha Empire. It is also where his queen, Saibai, died and where his son, Rajaram Chhatrapati, was born.<br \/>The fort is situated in the Sahyadri mountains, near the city of Pune.<br \/>Rajgad is known for its strong architecture and strategic position. The ruins of the fort include water cisterns, caves, and palaces. The winding paths and different peaks, such as the one with a flag on it, are characteristic features.<br \/>It is a popular trekking destination, especially during the monsoon season, as it offers a challenging climb and panoramic views.
