Mahalaxmi Devi

Mahalaxmi Temple

The Mahalaxmi Temple in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, also known locally as Ambabai. It is considered one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas. The ancient name for Kolhapur is Karveer, and the temple stands in the center of the old city

The temple’s history dates back to the Chalukya period, with some sources stating it was built around 634 CE or 700 AD by a Chalukyan ruler.
Its architecture is a blend of the Chalukya and Hemadpanti styles, featuring intricate carvings, ornate pillars, and a unique mortarless construction.
The idol of Mahalakshmi, carved from black stone, is three feet tall and has four arms.
A legend states that the city of Kolhapur is named after the demon Kolhasur, who was defeated by Goddess Mahalakshmi.
